Neljän joukkueen voimin pelattava ykkösdivisioona on puolessa välissä Roostersin pitäessä kärkisijaa voitettuaan kaikki ottelunsa. Runkosarjan jälkipuoliskolla helsinkiläisjoukkue kohtaa Jyväskylä Jaguarsin, Wasa Royalsin ja Kotka Eaglesin kotikentällään Velodromilla.

”Runkosarjan ollessa puolessa välissä on ollut erityisen hienoa nähdä, kuinka laajentunut joukkueemme on hioutunut erinomaisesti yhteen ja löytänyt yhteistä rytmiä kentällä ja kentän ulkopuolella. Olen erityisen ylpeä pelaajiemme kyvystä ja tahdosta nostaa omaa tasoaan jatkuvasti sekä hurjasta taistelutahdosta, jota koko joukkue on osoittanut alkukauden tiukoissa peleissä”, kertoo Roosters Womenin päävalmentaja sekä hyökkäyksen koordinaattori, Anni Kivikataja. Sarja on osoittautunut äärettömän tasaiseksi, ja helsinkiläisten seuraava vastustaja, Jyväskylä Jaguars, kukistui joukkueiden viime kohtaamisella kesäkuun alussa vasta jatkoajan jälkeen.

Kivikataja uskoo runkosarjan toisen puoliskon tarjoavan vähintäänkin yhtä paljon jännitystä kuin kesäkuussa pelatut ottelut. ”Yksikään vastustajistamme ei ole päästänyt meitä helpolla ja nyt pelattuamme kertaalleen kaikkia vastaan heidän kotikentällään, on meidän aika kutsua vieraaksi samat joukkueet. Pelitapojen ja vastustajien tultua tutummiksi tulee seuraavista kierroksista varmasti vähintään yhtä mielenkiintoiset kuin ensimmäisistä. Sarjassa ei ole varsinaisesti vielä ratkaistu mitään, ja vastustajamme saapuvat varmasti Helsingin Velodromille nälkäisinä metsästämään kukonnahkaa. Meidän tehtävämme on keskittyä oman pelaamisemme kehittämiseen ja läpi pelin omalla tasollamme pelaamiseen.”

Sarjan tasaisuutta korostaa myös Lohjalta kesäksi punapaitoihin siirtynyt, joukkueen kapteenistoon kuuluva, Roosa Eklund. ”Kausi on puolessa välissä ja komeillaan ansaitusti ensimmäisellä sijalla. Ensimmäinen sija ei kuitenkaan todellakaan ole tullut helpolla eikä yksikään peli ole ollut läpihuutojuttu; hyvin tasaiset pelit yllättivät ainakin itseni. Kausi on henkilökohtaisesti ollut täynnä uusia käänteitä itselle. Joukkue, kaverit ja valmennus vaihtuivat vain pari kuukautta ennen kauden alkua, pääsin myös ensimmäistä kertaa ikinä pelaamaan Jyväskylää ja Vaasaa vastaan sekä vuoden tauon jälkeen kohtaamaan jälleen rakkaan vihollisen Kotkan; ollaanhan me Lohjalla pelattu kotkalaisia vastaan jo vuodesta 2016 asti.”

Entä mikä on ollut Roostersin avain sarjan kärkipaikkaan? ”Roosters kasvoi monella lohjalaisella pelaajalla keväällä Lionessesin luovuttua sarjapaikasta Vaahteraliigassa ja vaikka Roostersissa otettiin kaikki lämpimästi vastaan ja tiimihenki oli jo valmiiksi hyvä, tekemisessä näkyi kuitenkin se, että uusia ihmisiä pölähti treeneihin kerralla paljon. Koen, että ensimmäisessä pelissä tämä kaikki kuitenkin karisi pois ja alettiin pelaamaan yhdessä joukkueena, mitä ei välttämättä ollut treeneissä vielä näkynyt. Tämä sama yhdessä tekeminen on näkynyt siitä asti, niin treeneissä kuin peleissäkin. Uskonkin, että tämä yhteishenki tulee olemaan meidän vahvuutemme kauden loppuun asti, sillä uutta vaihdetta on vaihdettu jo silmään seuraavia pelejä ajatellen. Uskon kuitenkin, että loppukaudesta on tulossa vähintään yhtä tasainen, sillä uusi vaihde on varmasti löydetty myös muissa joukkueissa”, aprikoi Eklund.

Yhdestä asiasta sekä Kivikataja että Eklund ovat täysin samaa mieltä – Velodromilla tullaan näkemään laadukasta ja kovaa jenkkifutista, jota jokaisen kannattaa tulla seuraamaan!

”Heinäkuussa onkin tarjolla kovaa ja mielenkiintoista jenkkifutista Velodromilla kolmen pelin verran, suosittelen tulemaan paikalle ja pukemaan punaista päälle!” Eklund toteaa.

”Myös katsojille ovat tiukat kohtaamiset olleet mielenkiintoista katsottavaa ja mikäli yleisö ei pääse kesälomilta Velodromille asti, streamaamme myös kotiottelut laajemmalle yleisölle”, muistuttaa puolestaan Kivikataja.

Women start with a 3-0 advantage for the second round of the regular season

The first division, played with four teams, is halfway through with Roosters leading the standings after winning all their matches. In the regular season’s second half, the Helsinki-based team will face Jyväskylä Jaguars, Wasa Royals, and Kotka Eagles at their home ground, Velodrom.

"As we reach the halfway point of the regular season, it has been particularly great to see how our expanded team has come together excellently and found a common rhythm both on and off the field. I am especially proud of our players' ability and willingness to continuously raise their own level and their incredible fighting spirit demonstrated in the tough early-season games," says Roosters Women's head coach and offensive coordinator, Anni Kivikataja. The league has proven to be extremely competitive, and Roosters' next opponent, Jyväskylä Jaguars, was defeated in their previous encounter in early June, only after overtime.

Kivikataja believes that the regular season’s second half will offer at least as much excitement as the games played in June. "None of our opponents have made it easy for us, and now that we have played each of them once on their home ground, it's time for us to invite the same teams as guests. As playing styles and opponents become more familiar, the upcoming rounds will surely be just as intriguing as the first ones. Nothing has been decisively settled in the league, and our opponents will certainly arrive at Helsinki Velodrom hungry to claim victory. Our task is to focus on developing our own gameplay and playing at our own level throughout the game."

The competitiveness of the league is also emphasized by Roosa Eklund, who joined the team from Lohja this summer and is part of the team's captaincy. "We are halfway through the season and rightfully holding the first place. However, achieving first place has by no means been easy, and no game has been a walk in the park; the very close matches surprised me, at least. Personally, the season has been full of new turns for me. The team, teammates, and coaching staff changed just a couple of months before the start of the season. I also got to play against Jyväskylä and Vaasa for the first time ever, and after a year's break, I faced our beloved rival Kotka again. After all, we have been playing against the Kotka team in Lohja since 2016."

And what has been the key for Roosters' top position in the league? "Roosters grew with the addition of several players from Lohja after Lionesses relinquished their spot in the Maple League in the spring. Although Roosters warmly welcomed everyone, and the team spirit was already good, it was noticeable that many new people joined the training sessions at once. However, I feel that in the first game, all of this fell away, and we started playing as a team, which may not have been evident in the training sessions yet. This same teamwork has been evident ever since, both in training and in games. I believe that this team spirit will be our strength until the end of the season because we have already shifted gears, looking ahead to the next games. However, I believe that the latter part of the season will be equally competitive since other teams have surely found a new gear as well," reflects Eklund.

Kivikataja and Eklund fully agree on one thing - Velodrom will showcase high-quality and intense American football that everyone should come and watch! "In July, there will be three intense and interesting American football games at Velodrom. I recommend coming and wearing red!" says Eklund. "The tight matchups have also been interesting to watch for the spectators, and if the audience can't make it to Velodrom due to summer vacations, we will be streaming the home games to a wider audience," reminds Kivikataja.
