Kaksi ensimmäistä otteluaan voittanut Roosters lähtee nälkäisenä kohtaamaan Kotka Eaglesin heidän kotikentällään lauantaina 17.6. Sarja on ollut äärettömän tasainen, joten varsinaista ennakkosuosikin osaa ei etukäteen ole kummallakaan joukkueella.

Kotka Eaglesin päävalmentaja, Jarkko Hiitola, kertoo kotkalaisjoukkueen tulevan nälkäisenä lauantain otteluun. Kotkassa on myös pantu merkille Roostersin vahvistunut rosteri.

”Kirvelevän vierastappion jälkeen lähdetään uuteen viikkoon sisuuntuneena. Ennustan, että lauantain pelistä tulee hyvätasoinen vääntö. Roostersin heittohyökkäys on Aada Salmisen johtamana todella vaarallinen ja meidän takakenttä saa olla hereillä koko ottelun, jotta isoilta peleiltä vältyttäisiin. Meidän juoksupuolustus on todistanut olevansa yksi liigan parhaista, joten tällä viikolla keskitytään heittopuolustamiseen entistä enemmän.”

Viime pelissä Roostersin MVP-palkinnon ansaitusti saanut, hyökkäyksen linjaa pelaava, Laura Hiltunen kertoo myös helsinkiläisten lähtevät nälkäisenä tulevaan kamppailuun. ”Odotan innolla tulevaa Kotkan peliä. Tämä viikko on hiottu edellisten pelien pieniä ajatusvirheitä kuntoon, ja uskon, että Kotkassa nähdään entistäkin vahvempi Roosters. Kentällä kannattaa ehdottomasti seurata puolustuksen linjan #99 Sarah Chimeä ja takakentällä puolustavaa #84 Vappu Kuokkasta”, hän vinkkaa.

Linjan vahvoja otteita peräänkuuluttaa myös helsinkiläisten hyökkäyksen linjan valmentajakaksikko, Anna Rajavuori ja Mika Lyyra.

”Ihan aluksi haluan kiittää Roosters organisaatiota mahdollisuudesta tulla osaksi naisten joukkueen hyökkäyksen linjan valmentamista. Olen nähnyt jenkkifutistaipaleellani monta hyvin erilaista joukkuetta/organisaatiota sekä pelaajana, että valmentajana. Mielestäni se on rikkaus, koska jokaisessa on ollut omat hyvät puolensa, joista on jäänyt hyviä muistoja ja tarinoita kiikkustuolilla kerrottavaksi. Kun nyt sain vielä mahdollisuuden päästä osaksi Suomen kautta-aikojen menestyksekkäintä jenkkifutisbrändiä ei asiaa tarvinnut kauaa pohtia. Tämä tarkoitti myös sitä, että tämänkin kesän saan nauttia tästä hienosta lajista kentän laidalla uuden jenkkifutisperheen kanssa, vaikka Lohjan naisjoukkue joutuikin valitettavasti luopumaan vaahteraliiga-paikastaan aivan kauden kynnyksellä. Minut on otettu joukkueeseen enemmän kuin hyvin vastaan, niin pelaajien kuin valmentajakollegoidenkin suhteen. Joukkueessa on erityisen positiivinen, lämmin ja kannustava ilmapiiri varustettuna mahtavilla persoonilla. Uskon, että osin tästä kumpuaakin alkukauden joukkueemme menestys”, Lyyra taustoittaa.

”Hyökkäyksen linjan varmaa suorittamista on ollut ilo katsella. Vaasa Royalsia vastaan pelatussa pelissä MVP-palkinnon pokkasi oikeana guardina pelannut Laura Hiltunen. Palkinto kertoo paitsi Laurasta erittäin kovana linjanaisena, myös koko linjan onnistumisesta, mikä näkyi muun muassa juostujen jaardien määrässä", Rajavuori summaa edellisen pelin antia. Ensimmäistä kauttaan pelaava Sarah Chime nostetaan esiin paitsi Hiltusen, myös Rajavuoren toimesta.

”Myös puolustuksen linja on tasaisen vahva. Rookie Sarah Chime on osoittanut olevansa kuin luotu endin paikalle.”

Roostersin menestyksen avaimiksi Lyyra nimeää peruspelaamisen sekä voitontahdon.

”Tavoitteeni kliseisesti kauteen hyökkäyksen linjan osalta on, että yksikkömme peruspelaaminen kehittyisi ottelu ottelulta kohti loppukesän ratkaisevia koitoksia. Nähtyääni pelaajien asenteen harjoituksissa, uskon vakaasti tähän ihan koko joukkueen osalta. Toki teemme myös ison kuvan ulkopuolella ottelukohtaisia viilauksia vastustajasta riippuen. Kotkassa meitä odottaakin varmasti nälkäinen ja voitontahtoinen vastustaja, joka on perinteisesti varustettuna muutamilla huippu-urheilijalla. Näihin meidän on syytä kiinnittää huomiota, niin puolustuksen kuin hyökkäyksenkin osalta.”

Perustekemistä painotetaan myös kotkalaisten puolelta.

”Viime viikolla meidän hyökkäys ei päässyt kunnolla käyntiin, vaikka muutama positiivinen välähdys siellä täällä nähtiinkin. Tällä viikolla ei lähdetä veivaamaan pelikirjaa uusiksi, vaan lähdetään hieromaan perusteita kohdilleen. Perustekemisellä mikä vaan joukkue voi voittaa kenet vaan”, Hiitola summaa ja jatkaa:

”On erittäin hyvä nähdä, että kaikki sarjan joukkueet ovat samantasoisia ja sillä tavoin saadaan loppuun asti mielenkiintoinen sarja!”

Jälleen uutta trilleripeliä ennustaa myös Lyyra.

”Uskon, että näemme lauantaina alkukauden vieraskiertueellemme jatkumoa ja upeassa kesäsäässä nähdään Kotkassa tiukka futistrilleri, jossa molemmat joukkueet saavat omat momentuminsa ottelun voittoon. Kumpi näihin tarraa kovemmin kiinni pääsee ansaitulle Juhannustauolle voitto taskussaan.”

Roosters Women go into their last away game of the summer with a 2-0 record

Roosters, who have won their first two matches, are eager to face Kotka Eagles on their home turf on Saturday, June 17th. The series has been incredibly competitive, so neither team holds the role of clear favorite beforehand.

Jarkko Hiitola, the head coach of Kotka Eagles, states that his team is hungry for Saturday's match. They have also taken note of Roosters' strengthened roster.

"After a bitter away loss, we enter the new week with determination. I predict that Saturday's game will be a high-quality battle. Roosters' passing offense, led by Aada Salminen, is truly dangerous, and our defensive backfield needs to be alert throughout the entire match to avoid big plays. Our run defense has proven to be one of the best in the league, so this week we will focus even more on pass defense," says Hiitola.

Laura Hiltunen, who plays on the offensive line and rightfully earned Roosters' MVP award in the last game, also mentions that Helsinki's team is hungry for the upcoming challenge. "I'm looking forward to the game in Kotka. This week, we've worked on correcting the minor mistakes from the previous games, and I believe we will see an even stronger Roosters in Kotka. On the field, it's definitely worth keeping an eye on #99 Sarah Chime on the defensive line and #84 Vappu Kuokkanen in the defensive backfield," she suggests.

The coaching duo of Anna Rajavuori and Mika Lyyra, who focus on the offensive line, emphasizes the strong performance of the line.

"First and foremost, I want to thank the Roosters organization for the opportunity to be part of coaching the women's team's offensive line. Throughout my journey in American football, I've seen many different teams/organizations as both a player and a coach. I consider it a richness because each one has had its own strengths, leaving behind good memories and stories to be told in the rocking chair. Now that I got the chance to be part of Finland's most successful American football brand, I didn't need much time to think about it. This also meant that I’m able to enjoy this fantastic sport on the sidelines with a new American football family this summer, even though the Lohja women's team, unfortunately, had to give up their Maple League spot right on the eve of the season. I have been welcomed into the team more than well by the players and coaching colleagues. The team has an especially positive, warm, and supportive atmosphere, filled with amazing personalities. I believe that part of our early-season success stems from this," explains Lyyra.

"It has been a pleasure to witness the consistent performance of the offensive line. In the game against Vaasa Royals, Laura Hiltunen, who played as the right guard, was awarded the MVP. The award not only speaks to Laura's excellence as a strong lineman but also the success of the entire line, which was evident in the number of yards gained," sums up Rajavuori about the previous game. Sarah Chime, playing her first season, is highlighted by both Hiltunen and Rajavuori.

"Our defensive line is also consistently strong. Rookie Sarah Chime has shown that she is a natural fit at the end position."

Lyyra identifies fundamental execution and the will to win as the keys to Roosters' success.

"As a cliché, my goal for the offensive line this season is for our unit's fundamental play to improve from game to game as we approach the crucial battles of late summer. Seeing the players' attitude in practice, I firmly believe in this, across the entire team. Of course, we also make specific adjustments based on the opponent's game plan. In Kotka, we will undoubtedly face a hungry and determined opponent, traditionally equipped with a few top athletes. We need to pay attention to them both defensively and offensively."

Fundamental execution is also emphasized on the Kotka side.

"Our offense didn't really get going last week, although we did see a few positive flashes here and there. This week, we won't overhaul the playbook but rather focus on getting the basics right. With fundamental execution, any team can beat any opponent," sums up Hiitola, continuing:

"It's great to see that all the teams in the league are on a similar level, making the competition interesting until the end!"

Lyyra also predicts another thrilling game.

"I believe that on Saturday, we will continue our early-season away tour, and in the beautiful summer weather, we will witness a tight football thriller in Kotka, where both teams will have their moments to secure the victory. Whichever team seizes those moments more effectively will head into a well-deserved midsummer break with a win."
